Python regius
Python regius Royal python is without any doubt the commercially most successfully bred snake species. Despite its natural form doesn't have any extreme colour variety, an incredible amount of variants of both colour and pattern was already achieved in breeding. There's no point in listing them all here, if you're interested in them, just go and see web pages of any of the world's best regius breeders. Among all pythonidae species, royal python's colour variant breeding has gone the farthest. Whereas double heterozygotes merely started appearing in boa breeds, there already are even breeds of triple heterozygotes of royal pythons. Not very ago, prices of piebalds around 20 thousand USD were shocking. Nowadays, the price of these combined crossbreeds normally reaches 40, 50, or even 60 thousand USD per piece. And it seems like new variants are appearing in a geometric progression speed. It is a great stimulation for breeders, who were afraid that albinos, salmons jungles and others belong to a finite set of forms and who worried about the prices going down a lot before they reach their aim, without bringing any of their large investments back. In reality, the falling price of the basic variants is compensated by the creation of others, often very original, by most breeders. Royal Python has the reputation of being a snake more difficult to breed. That is why we bought several pairs from Czech breeds or stabilized imported snakes that were held in captivity for long time in the beginning (2002). During the very first year we bred 16 young snakes from 2 females without any trouble. This made us sure that the main problem really is to offer the pythons high enough seasonal fluctuation. During the winter, they need the temperature to fall to at least 20°C (68°F), preferably 18°C (64°F). It is understandable that this is hard to reach while living in a in block of flats. That is the reason why there is (and will be) such a high demand for royal pythons – many people simply keep them as pets at home, without any ambition to breed them. We're continually putting together the basic collection of royal python variants and we hope to move them towards the most attractive forms in our own breed. There are many “basic” variants in royal python breeds, that are not really outstanding (and may even be hard to identify for beginners), but putting co-dominant forms together or combing them with other recessive mutation suddenly creates totally different animals. Take pastel and super-pastel as an example, they are just totally different animals. Or the combination of spider x pastel, which creates fantastic bumble bee form, an unreal dream of many breeders until quite recently.
